Slice of America: Charred in the Florida Sun - TRAILER
Slice of America: Charred in the Florida Sun
A true fish-out-of-water story, or should we say, a pizza-out-of-Connecticut story, about a New Haven-native with a love for the town’s beloved “apizza” (pronounced: ah-beetz), who does the impossible by bringing the charred, thin-crusted, best pizza in the world to southern Florida.
In Slice of America, episode one, Charred in the Florida Sun, Jimmy Fantin opens Fantini’s “New Haven Style” Apizza in the small coastal town of Stuart, Florida. With the support of loyal Connecticut snowbirds jonesing for a slice of home, and a rave review from One Bite’s Dave Portnoy, Fantini’s thrives and becomes a hub for pizza in Florida, with pizza-lovers driving a hundred miles or more for just a taste of one of Jimmy’s pies.
Director Gorman Bechard, the filmmaker behind the documentary Pizza A Love Story (and 20 other feature-films), and host/pizza historian Colin M. Caplan lead us on this amusing journey of pizza love and perfection. You will laugh, learn about the origins of pizza, and fall in love with Jimmy’s passion. But mostly you will leave hungry, wanting to experience Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza for yourself.

I knew 14 years ago that this dog would one day break my heart. From the first time Kristine and I saw that spotted tongue, after driving two hours in a snow storm to pick him up on December 20, 2008. He was born in Memphis. For various reasons I won’t go into here, we always felt he was a reincarnated rock star. His eyes even looked lined with eyeliner (probably a glam or emo rock star). He wa...

He’s mistaken about School Kids Records, it wasn’t in Columbus Ohio, it was in Ann Arbor Michigan where the University of Michigan is and the club he was most likely talking about there is The Blind Big.

The whole hippie situation was one of just complete debauchery, hedonism, and indulgence. They thought they were so cool and free but looking back today, they were really a bunch of losers who didn't want to contribute or grow up.

Ive watched this (and the Tommy interview too) so many times Ive lost count, its just great! Thank you for putting this out! I love "Dont tell a soul" I think its one of their best albums. So great to hear the producer/engineers side of it, I love hearing/reading about recording as I make my own music and this is gold, Thank you mister GormanBechard!

I never liked seeing the Replacements in concert for the very reason he stated. If anyone represents the Minneapolis Sound - it is the Replacements. Each album is a gem, and Westerberg was a great song writer.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, thanks. Regarding Matt's point about playing the game, with the industry, press, even fans - my friend and I were leaving the 930 Club in DC after a great Westerberg solo show. Paul was sitting on the steps of his tour bus, talking and signing things. My friend said "want to say hi to Paul?" I passed as I knew Paul's reputation and didn't want to sully a fantastic show. For me, it's good enough to have the records and see the shows.

" I'm a big fan of bands sellout records for for some reason, because i feel like uh you get glimpses into people at those times that can be not good, but you can also see that you know what i know you're trying awfully hard here to break the mold. and I'm championing your cause because of this and uh the songs were still great and um, it held as much sway over me because i felt like there was a guy as a songwriter coming through here uh making way through the the bombast and the chaos of what the replacements had become." Love this. And love Don't Tell A Soul for the same reason. Just like I love Pleasant Dreams by The Ramones.

“Too dumb to realize how cool it was”. Pretty much summarizes the 1980s in Chicago for me. I saw all of these iconic ( Mats, REM, Husker Du etc) indie bands, for $5-10 a show. Fun. Wish I carried a camera, a diary and sobriety!

What the Replacements did for Dave at the Rat (I was there that night as well-incredible show) Dave's band the Neighborhoods did for me a few years prior to that. I saw them from right in front of the stage at that Rat and their raw punk/rock energy and great hooks changed my outlook on music. My UFO and Yes records gathered some dust after that night (though I've since returned to them and knocked the dust off). The Neighborhoods were power pop/punk and a GREAT live band and Dave is a tremendous songwriter. I wish he'd gotten to play one of his own songs at those shows he did with Paul but that would have been asking a bit too much.

One of my favorite stories I ever heard about the replacements was how they came down to play Atlanta pretty early in their career and Bob got completely shit-faced drunk and passed out blocking the door of the apartment where some guy was letting the band crash. He was literally crashed out and no one could get in for an unspecified number of hours because he was too heavy and comatose.
